Limewash – Houses in France

April 5, 2013

Old buildings are often made with lime based mortars, and this same material, lime, can be used as paint or as plaster, so that there is a fusion through all parts of an old wall, inside and out. This integrity is physically beneficial too, as it allows old walls to ‘breathe’ and avoid the damage caused by condensation.
Cement has the opposite effect, trapping moisture within the wall, where it can cause much damage. Unfortunately modern acrylic based paints can have the same effects too, sealing moisture within the wall. For these reasons much of my own work is lime based.
Ancient materials like lime washes or oil based paints have their own integral beauty and will remain beautiful even as they age and mature.
